The future of web apps will be client-side in my opinion and I will tell you why.
After building my language-learning application, I found it nearly impossible to get users due to how locked down everything is. The big players have made it harder and harder to get traction.
Even Google, when I emailed my URL, said my site was unverified, and I still do not know how to get verified.
I am now learning react native and Expo Go to make a phone app.
I think server-side rendering (SSR) is often unnecessary.
SSR requires a ton of work and runs up a bill for, say, a web crawler (meaning a search engine) that could hide you and AI that could take your information and give you a tiny attribution link.
Web Apps will continue and so will SSR and all the rest, I am simply talking about new applications. I think the calculus has changed.
I built Avid Language Learning, my language-learning application, without AI and was on the fence about putting AI in it to define terms because I felt AI was against classical humanism.
It depends how we use AI. I use it all the time now and find it great, even for classical humanism, but I think we need guardrails for learners.
I remember the Cara.app running up a huge bill because of SSR.
